Link Capacity Assignment in Packet-Switched Networks: The Case of Piecewise Linear Concave Cost Function

چکیده
In this paper, we study the link capacity assignment problem in packet-switched networks (CA problem) focusing on the case where link cost function is a piecewise linear concave function. This type of cost function arises in many communication network design problems such as those arising from developments in communication transmission technologies. It is already known that the method of link set assignment is applicable for solving the CA problem with piecewise linear convex cost function. That is, each link in the network is assigned to one of a group of specific sets, and checked for link set contradiction. By extending the method of link set assignment to the case of piecewise linear concave cost function, an important characteristic of the optimal solution of the CA problem is derived. Based on this characteristic, the non-differentiable link cost function can be treated as a differentiable function, and a heuristic algorithm derived from the Lagrange multiplier method is then proposed. Although it is difficult to determine the global optimum of the CA problem due to its non-convexity, it is shown by numerical results that the solution obtained from the proposed algorithm is very close to the global optimum. Moreover, the computation time is linearly dependent on the number of links in the problem. These performances show that the proposed algorithm is very efficient in solving the CA problem, even in the case of large-scale networks. key words: communication networks and services, packet-

A Memetic Algorithm to Communication Network Design Taking into Consideration an Existing Network
It is well-known that utilizing existing network facilities in the construction of new network is very important in the case of short-term network design [1]. The reason is that existing network facilities are ready to be used and cannot be changed easily in a short period of time. For the short-term network design, we have studied the link capacity assignment for packet-switched networks with ...

In this paper the problem of minimum cost communication network design is considered where the costs are piecewise linear concave. Several methods are compared: Simulated Annealing method, a heuristic based on the method proposed by Minoux, and a lagrangian method based on lower bounding procedure.

متن کاملA new switching strategy for exponential stabilization of uncertain discrete-time switched linear systems in guaranteed cost control problem
Uncertain switched linear systems are known as an important class of control systems. Performance of these systems is affected by uncertainties and its stabilization is a main concern of recent studies. Existing work on stabilization of these systems only provides asymptotical stabilization via designing switching strategy and state-feedback controller. In this paper, a new switching strate...
متن کاملA concave link elimination (CLE) procedure and lower bound for concave topology, capacity and flow assignment network design problems
We examine the Concave Topology Capacity and Flow Assignment (TCFA) problem. Only two algorithms in the literature are appropriate for solving TCFA problems with concave link cost functions: Kleinrock and Gerla’s Concave Branch Elimination (CBE) procedure, [26][20], and a greedy link elimination procedure developed by Gersht [21]. However, neither works well in practice. The CBE procedure does ...
